University Congregational Housing Association 2009 Annual Report

UCHA has been an active affiliate of the church since 1983. The 20 current members are dedicated to finding creative ways to prevent homelessness and to provide housing for families and individuals in need.

The UCUCC greater community supported UCHA efforts with wonderful generosity in 2009. The UCHA auction led by Gail Winberg in Spring 2009 raised over $40,000 for Plymouth Healing Communities to support purchase and renovation of an apartment building for supported homes for those with mental illness.

Contributions during our Harvest Home Tea hosted by Evelyn Crichton, the Robert Burns evening, Men's Down Home Breakfast coordinated by John Davis and other efforts supported additional projects. These include HomeStep to subsidize one family for a year ($5,000), Church of Mary Magdalene center for homeless women ($6,500), Family & Adult Service Center ($3,000) and Solid Ground/Sandpoint Housing with Sue Hall coordination. UCHA provides Saturday lunches during the year for Mary's Place organized by Claudia Patton and creates welcome baskets for new residents of transitional housing at Sandpoint with Sue Hall coordinating.

UCHA owns or manages three properties providing affordable housing in Seattle including: Sortun Court offering 16 units for families with Gail Winberg as UCHA property representative; The Lin House serving 3 tenants placed thru Community Psychiatric Clinic with Claudia Patton's coordination; and The Boathouse, a six unit apartment building on Capital Hill with Susan Heck as property manager.

Property development plans are underway to create housing to support youth, particularly those graduating from foster homes. UCHA is also working with the UCUCC Homes and Hospitality Action Team to coordinate partnerships for a range of care for the homeless. UCHA revised the bylaws with budget and terms to match the calendar year.
